By 1970, Villarreal had been promoted to the Segunda Division, Spain’s second league and they remained there for two seasons before facing relegation back to the Segunda Division B.

Villarreal CF Gain Success and Promotion to La Liga

A date that will live long in the memory of all Villarreal supporters is the 24th May 1998, the day the club sealed promotion for the first time in their history to Spain’s top division, La Liga de las Estrellas.

The clubs first campaign in the top flight started with an intimidating visit to the Santiago Bernabeu to face Spanish giants, Real Madrid. Villarreal struggled in their first year in La Liga and were relegated back to the Segunda Division.

Villarreal finished third in this league and were promoted straight back to La Liga in 2000 where they have remained ever since.

Villarreal CF Enjoy Success in European Competition

It is in Europe that Villarreal have enjoyed their most success, winning the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2003 with victory in the final over Dutch side Heerenveen.

This cup success qualified Villarreal for the 2004 UEFA Cup for the first time and they managed to reach the semi-finals of the competition, only losing out to eventual winners and near neighbours Valencia.

That same year Villarreal won the UEFA Intertoto Cup again and qualified for the following seasons UEFA Cup again. The club reached the quarter-final stage this time around, losing to AZ Alkmar of Holland, but managed a league finish of third place in La Liga, their highest ever finish, to earn qualification directly to the UEFA Champions League for the first time.

After a further unsuccessful UEFA Cup campaign, Villarreal once again qualified for the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League with a second place finish in La Liga.
