The Spanish Primera Liga title race continues apace and it looks as if it will not be decided until the final day of the season. Four clubs are challenging for the title - Real Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla and Valencia.
Valencia Keep up Chase
Valencia who started the weekend in fourth place played first and their away win over Real Mallorca took them above Sevilla and only a point behind the leaders. Valencia had totally dominated the first half but in an end to end second period, it looked as if the game was going to end goalless until Joaquin scored in the final minute. Valencia are seeking to win their third title in six years.
Sevilla fresh from their UEFA Cup success found themselves a goal behind at Deportivo La Coruna with less than twenty minutes remaining. However, they had drawn level within four minutes when Renato scored and the winner came from Fredi Kanoute with seven minutes left. Sevilla claimed the top of the table for a temporary period a point ahead of Real and Barcelona who had games later in the evening.
Defeated UEFA Cup finalists, Espanyol suffered a heavy defeat at home to Getafe. Espanyol scored an early goal but after that it all went wrong as they conceded five.
Real Madrid Stay Top:
Real Madrid played at Recreativo Huelva and returned to the top spot with a 3-2 win but after holding a two goal lead early in the second half, they required a last minute winner to secure the points. An early goal from Robinho was followed by a penalty from Ruud van Nistelrooy early in the second half. A seventy fifth minute penalty reduced the arrears and with four minutes left the home team equalised. However in the ninetieth minute Roberto Carlos scored the crucial winner.
Barcelona's Emphatic Win:
While the others may have struggled to take the three points, Barcelona had no such problems. They had a convincing 6-0 win at Atletico Madrid. Three ahead at half-time they doubled the score in the second half. Barcelona had to wait until the thirty ninth minute for their first goal from Messi but scored three in six minutes from Zambrotta and Eto'o. Ronaldinho, Messi and Iniesta completed the rout, the final goal coming in the last minute.
The top of the Primera Liga table remains as it was at the beginning of the weekend. Real Madrid are top with Barcelona level on 69 points while Sevilla are third, two points behind and Valencia a further two points adrift. Three games remain to the end of the season and none of the teams can afford to slip up.
