Shakhtar Donetsk took their place in European football history by winning the 2009 UEFA Cup title with a 2-1 victory in extra time over Werder Bremen. Luiz Adriano opened the scoring in the 25th minute but Naldo equalized 10 minutes later. And Jadson won the game in the 97th minute at Sükrü Saraçoglu Stadium in Istanbul. First European TitleShakhtar captured their first ever European title and they were the first Ukrainian team to win the UEFA Cup. And they will be the last club to be crowned UEFA Cup champs as the competition will be renamed the UEFA Europa League. Bremen lost their chances of winning the second ever European crown following the 1992 Cup Winners Cup title. Little Offense Early OnLuiz Adriano was fed a through ball and had space after five minutes but shot just wide left as the Ukrainians' Brazilians picked apart the Bremen defense for the first time. Werder Bremen Miss Diego In MidfieldBremen had real struggles without the suspended Diego patrolling the midfield to figure out the Donetsk in the first 20 minutes other than a mini-chance by Frank Baumann after eight minutes which went well wide right. Luiz Adriano Gave Donetsk The LeadThe Germans appeared to control play but Razvan Rat threaded the needled for Luiz Adriano, who streaked onto the ball and looped it past a charging Bremen keeper Tim Wiese for a 1-0 Donetsk lead after 25 minutes. Naldo Header Makes It 1-1Naldo equalized for Bremen 1-1 in the 35th minute on a free kick blast from 30 yards. Donetsk's veteran keeper Andriy Pyatov appeared to have time the bat the ball away but the deflection went back into his net. Even 1-1 At Half-TimeWiese made a fine stop on Mariusz Lewandowski in the 42nd and Clemens Fritz cleared just in front of the big Polish midfielder in injury time before the game was even 1-1 at half-time. Battle In MidfieldDonetsk allowed Bremen to have a bit more possession of the ball in the first quarter-hour after the break. But Werder were still unable to launch many offensive attacks. Pyatov Stops Pizarro HeaderPyatov kept the score tied with an outstanding save on Claudio Pizarro's header to the lower left corner off a free kick with 13 minutes to play. Pizarro Goal DisallowedPizarro scored in the 90th minute on a pass from Mesut Özil, but the young German international was ruled offsides and the goal was disallowed. Jadson Scores In Extra TimeThe game was headed into extra time - and Shakhtar made it 2-1 in the 97th minute as Dario Srna's cross went to Jadson, whose shot was slowed by Wiese but the ball cross the line. Pyatov Stops PizarroPizarro nearly equalized again just two minutes later but Pyatov stopped the Peruvian's header from five yards. And Alexandros Tziolis's blast from the edge of the area went just wide of the right post in the 111th minute. Another Pizarro Goal DisallowedPizarro scored again in the 119th minute but the goal was disallowed as he was ruled to have fouled the Donetsk defender.
