Another In A Long Line Of Germany Top Strikers
Werder Bremen's U17 striker Lennart Thy has become a hotly-seen attacking prospect after he tied Luc Castaignos with a tournament-high three goals in guiding Germany to the title at the 2009 U17 European Championship.
Move To Bremen In 2007
Thy was born on February 25, 1992 in Frechen. He started his playing days with Viktoria Frechen before also playing with FC Norden, PSV Norden and JFV Norden. Thy moved to Werder Bremen's amateur system starting on July 1, 2007.
Superb 2008-09 Season
For the 2007-08 season, Thy scored seven goals in 21 goals for the Werder Bremen U17 side. In 2008-09, the 1.82 m, 74.5 kg striker took off, tallying 23 goals and eight assists in 22 games with the U17 team. And Werder promoted Thy for one game in 2009 to the U19 side.
U16 Germany National Team
Thy was added to the extended circle of the German U16 national team on February 28, 2008 as a 15-year-old. And he played four times for the U16 team without scoring a goal.
Hat-Trick Against Russia
The individual personal highlight for Thy so far with U17 German national team came in October 2008 when he scored a hat-trick in the Germany's 5-0 victory over Russia, hitting the first, second and fourth goals.
2009 U17 European Championship
The absolute highlight for the striker, however, came at the 2009 U17 European Championship in Germany. Thy overcame a knee ligament problem in the buildup to the tournament and was a substitute in Germany's opening 3-1 victory over Turkey. He missed two good chances in the opener but scored in the second game, 4 -0 win against England. Thy played in all five games, including the final against Netherlands in Magdeburg. After the Dutch went ahead 1-0, Thy evened the game with a header for his third goal of the tournament. And Germany ended up winning 2-1 in extra time.
Top 2009 U17 Euro Scorer With Costaignos
Thy's three goals left him even with the Netherlands' Luc Costaignos as the top scorer of the 2009 U17 European Championship. The three goals gave Thy nine goals in 17 matches for Germany's U17 national team.
Celebrating Title With Bremen Team-Mate Trinks
Besides the euphoria of winning the European Championship, the feat was made all the more sweeter for Thy by the fact that he won the title with his Bremen U17 team-mate Florian Trinks, who even scored the winning goal in the final.

Praise From German Senior Boss Löw
Thy also received praise from the German senior national team coach Joachim Löw. When asked by the German sports news agency sid about which players impressed him at the U17 Euros, Löw said: "Mario Götze played a very strong tournament. I also liked what I saw from numbers 2 (Bienvenue Basala-Mazana) 7 (Christopher Buchtmann) and 9 (Lennart Thy). Now we have to wait and see how the players develop."
