LA Galaxy Coach Arena Reacts To SpeculationBruce Arena Responds To Rumors About Beckham, Donovan
LA Galaxy head coach/general manager Bruce Arena admits his MLS club doesn't know what part of rumors surrounding David Beckham and Landon Donovan are true or not.
Rumors and speculation are flying around Europe that David Beckham and Landon Donovan want to stay on at their respective European clubs AC Milan and Bayern Munich, respectively, though both are on loan from MLS club Los Angeles Galaxy. And the head coach and general manager from the Galaxy, Bruce Arena, admits he is unsure what to make of all the talk. Beckham In Top Form At AC MilanThe former English national team captain David Beckham has been in superb form at Italian giants AC Milan, scoring his first goal of the season with the Serie A team last weekend. Reports throughout the continent have quoted Beckham and AC Milan officials as saying they could imagine keeping the star midfielder full time. On Loan Until Early MarchBeckham, however, is only in Milan on loan from the Galaxy until March 8, when he would be due back in the United States to start preparations for the 2009 Major League Soccer season.
Donovan Fulfilling Dream At Munich Landon Donovan is also on loan until March 8 to a European club, German powers Bayern Munich. And the American has excelled in exhibition games in the winter break of the Bundesliga, scoring four goals in five games. And Donovan told the Munich newspaper Abendzeitung on January 23, 2009: "If I go back to the Galaxy, we have our first game March 21, so I'd have to return at least one week earlier. But that would be sad. I want to make it here. It is my dream. I want to stay here a few years." Accurate? Inaccurate? Arena Doesn't Know For SureL.A. boss Bruce Arena seemed a bit unsure exactly how to react to all the reports, calling a lot of the reporting inaccurate though at times there is some accuracy. "Somewhere between all this stuff is the truth. I'll say what we've said all along, we have two players out on loan agreements, and those end March 8. We've never said anything otherwise," was Arena's response on January 27, 2009 on MLSnet.com.
Is It Fair For Big European Clubs To Make Comments? Arena also questioned where it was appropriate for the biggest clubs in the world to make comments on his players without first contacting the Galaxy. He added on MLSnet.com: "Having said that, we don't know if there's anything accurate at the other end, either. I'll leave it at that. But I will tell you this: we will honor our end of these loan agreements, and we'll do everything that's proper."
