Defending champions Werder Bremen, record champions Bayern Munich and Hoffenheim were among the favorites into the German Cup quarters with Stuttgart and Dortmund out.

The defending champions Werder Bremen, record champions Bayern Munich and Hoffenheim were among the favorites to win during Round of 16 action on Tuesday October 27 and Wednesday October 28, 2009 and advance into the quarter-finals. Top flight sides Stuttgart and Borussia Dortmund were not as fortunate, dropping to lower class teams.

Bremen Too Much For Kaiserslautern

Defending champions Werder Bremen were a class better than second division side Kaiserslautern, winning 3-0 on Wednesday and extending their home winning streak in the German Cup to 33 games. The last loss at home for Bremen dates back to April 13, 1988.

Without injured striker Claudio Pizarro, Petri Pasanen opened the scoring after 27 minutes and Tim Borowski made it 2-0 in the 39th. Torsten Oehrl finished the night with his goal in the 76th minute.

First Half Enough For Bayern

Bayern Munich scored three goals within 15 minutes in a strong first half in overpowering fellow top flight side Eintracht Frankfurt 4-0 on Wednesday. Miroslav Klose struck in the 14th and 19th minutes and fed Thomas Müller for his goal in the 29th minute. And Luca Toni finished the scoring in the 52nd minute for Louis van Gaal's winning side.

Schalke Ease Past 1860 Munich

Benedikt Höwedes scored twice in the second half to give Schalke a comfortable 3-0 victory at second division side 1860 Munich on Wednesday. Rafinha hit the first goal after just 18 minutes before Höwedes struck in the 48th and 81st minutes to send Schalke into the final eight for the 25th time. The financial bonus of reaching the quarters is a big boost for the financially-strapped Schalke club.

Hoffenheim Run Past Koblenz In Second Half

Hoffenheim went into half-time scoreless at home against second division Koblenz but reached the German Cup quarters for the third time with a convincing 4-0 victory on Wednesday.

Sejad Salihovic gave Hoffenheim the lead after 50 minutes with a direct free kick. Vedad Ibisevic made it 2-0 after 67 minutes while Maicosuel hit on 71 minutes and Marvin Compper scored the final goal in the 90th minute.

FC Ausburg Reach First Cup Quarters

FC Augsburg cruised into the quarter-finals with a very convincing 5-0 victory on Tuesday over fellow second division side MSV Duisburg, who finished with 10 men. Sandor Torghelle scored in first half injury time and Michael Thurk made it 2-0 a minute into the second half. Uwe Möhrle extended the lead in the 55th minute before Torghelle struck his second goal in the 74th and Marcel Ndjeng finished the scoring in the 76th minute Duisburg played the final 39 minutes a man down when Caiuby saw a red card.

Cologne Ease Past Eintracht Trier

Top flight Cologne did not have any problem with their favorite status in reaching the quarters with a strong 3-0 victory at fourth division Eintracht Trier. Former German international Mario Basler's team had eliminated first division side Hanover and second division leaders Arminia Bielefeld coming into the game. Trier reached the semi-finals in 1998 by knocking off European Cup Winners Cup champions Schalke as well as Borussia Dortmund.

But Milivoje Novakovic and Youssef Mohamad scored within four minutes of each other to make it 2-0 after 29 minutes. Lukas Podolski struck the post in the 51st minute before Maniche finished the scoring off in the 52nd minute sending Cologne to the final eight for the first time since 2002-03.

Stuttgart Nightmare Continues In Cup

Stuttgart's nightmare season continued in the German Cup as they were bounced from the competition with a 1-0 loss at second division Greuther Fürth. Bernd Nehrig scored the only goal of the game in the 32nd minute for Fürth's first victory over Stuttgart in 33 years. Stuttgart have now lost five straight matches domestically and internationally.

Stuttgart chairman Horst Heldt on Wednesday said coach Markus Babbel would not be sacked and there would not even be an ultimatum set for the coach. Honorary Stuttgart player and former German world champion Guido Buchwald said watching his former team hurts him and made himself available as coach if needed.

Osnabrück Boots Dortmund

Third division VfL Osnabrück eliminated their second straight top flight side, knocking off Borussia Dortmund 3-2 to reach the quarter-finals for the second time after 1989-90. Karsten Baumann's Osnabrück, who bounced Hamburg in the Round of 32, got the game winner by Benjamin Siegert in the 69th minute.

Osnabrück captain Angelo Barlett gave the underdogs the lead 2-0 with goals in the 37th and 42nd minute in front of more than 16,000 at their Stadion an der Bremer Brücke grounds. Dortmund pulled a goal back after 55 minutes and Lucas Barrios made it 3-2 six minutes into second half injury time.
