Having failed to retain their Bundesliga title, Bayern Munich have started to make big changes at the club - both on and off the pitch.

The 2008/09 season didn't go as planned for FC Bayern with the club eventually finishing second in the table behind Wolfsburg. The more worrying aspect for the club was that it almost missed out on a Champions League place following a tight season at the top.

Only a good late run, following the sacking of Jurgen Klinsmann, secured the Bavarians a place in the top three and big changes have been made in the hope they can bring the title back to Munich.

Managerial Changes at Bayern Munich

The biggest structural changes at Bayern have come off the pitch.

With last season's manager Jurgen Klinsmann gone and interim boss Jupp Heynckes departing for Leverkusen, Bayern moved quickly to secure the appointment of Louis Van Gaal as manager.

The Dutchman brings a wealth of experience of top level management following spells at Ajax and Barcelona, and is fresh off the back of a title winning season in Holland with AZ Alkmaar. He will be assisted by former reserve coach, Hermann Gerland.

As well as a new manager, Bayern will have a new Sporting Director next season. Christian Nerlinger, who was a popular player at Bayern in the nineties, has been appointed to the position to help Uli Hoeness.

New Strikers at FC Bayern

Bayern Munich have acted fast to secure two new strikers following a disappointing season in front of goal.

Current strikers Luca Toni and Miroslav Klose came under scrutiny last season for not scoring enough goals, while Lukas Podolski has decided to return to his previous club Cologne.

As a result, Bayern raided Hamburg to sign Croatian Ivica Olic and have splashed the cash to secure the signing of in demand Stuttgart forward, Mario Gomez.

The work rate of Olic combined with the strike power of Gomez will be a mouth watering prospect for Bayern's fans and will put fear into opposition defences all over Germany.

New Midfield at FC Bayern

With Ze Roberto going and Frank Ribery's future uncertain, Bayern Munich have brought in reinforcements to the midfield.

Ukrainian star Anatoliy Tymoschuk will come in from Zenit to strengthen the centre for Bayern, where as Daniel Pranjic, signed from Dutch side Heerenveen, has been brought in to provide the same great service from the left that has seen him become a star player for Croatia.

An interesting addition to Bayern's squad next season is the arrival of highly rated young German winger Andeas Baumjohan from Gladbach. Some are saying that Baumjohan has been signed as a potential long term replacement for Frank Ribery.

Defensive Changes Expected at Bayern

An area that really suffered for Bayern Munich last season was the defence. As a result, big changes are expected at the back - especially in the problematic full back positions.

Christian Lell looked shaky, while Marcell Jansen was sold in January after a dismal spell. That leaves Phillip Lahm as the only out and out full back at Bayern, with on loan Massimo Oddo returning to AC Milan.

Bayern will have Andreas Gorlitz available following two years on loan at Karlsruhe, while left back come centre back Edson Braafheid has been signed from FC Twente at the personal request of Louis Van Gaal.

With the defence still looking a touch weak, expect FC Bayern to continue to strengthen this area, among others, throughout the summer.
