Since David Beckham has returned to the England team there has been much speculation that he would not join LA Galaxy in the summer. Now this has been fuelled by a claim from the Real Madrid President, Ramon Calderon, that he would like Beckham to remain with the club and that there could be a buy out clause in his contract which would bring about his release.
Six months Beckham ago was out of the Real Madrid team with the coach, Fabio Capello, telling that he would never play for the club again. The new England manager, Steve McLaren, had omitted him from selection for his country and Beckham’s career seemed to be ebbing to a close. Although only thirty one the offer to finish his career in America seemed appealing. LA Galaxy offered him the opportunity to play in the American Major League Soccer, a move which fitted perfectly with Victoria Beckham’s desire to move to America.
Agreement was reached and plans were put in place as Beckham signed a five year deal reportedly worth £128 million.
As always Beckham conducted himself with dignity and carried on training with Real and in due course he so impressed his coach that he made his way back into the Real team just as they mounted a challenge for the Primera Liga title. Now Real Madrid are one game away from winning the title and Beckham has been recalled to the England team. Steve McLaren facing possible elimination from the European Championships changed his mind and decided that Beckham could help to rescue England and save his position.
Beckham delivered on both accounts assisting England in their victory over Estonia and McLaren’s job remains secure at the moment.
However, with Beckham’s return to form speculation has arisen suggesting he might play in England during the American close season and now Calderon has further fuelled the rumours by stating he would like to keep him at the Bernabeu, suggesting that there is a clause in the contract which could allow them to retain his services.
However, Beckham has indicated that he has no intention of breaking his contract with the American club which has invested an immense sum of money to sign him. He wants to finish his time in Europe on a high with Real Madrid as champions and while in America he hopes to add to his appearances for England, in spite of the massive travelling commitment that will involve.
Most players in Spain have a buy out clause in their contracts and Calderon in presuming that Beckham’s contract with LA Galaxy contains a similar clause but it would be uncharacteristic of Beckham to try to change the contract he has signed. Having made the decision, Beckham in all probability will move to America with the aim of raising the profile of soccer in that country.
